Bush and Rice were hardly the first Western leaders to sally forth into the desert with bright eyes and blueprints for a "new Middle East". But they seemed unaware of how many hopeful predecessors had bogged down in the dunes, blistered by sunstroke and bitten by scorpions. Or maybe they thought the world had changed so much that this history held no useful lessons.

I'm home sick with what we strongly suspect may be fifth disease. I've got the fever and rash on my arms and I was exposed to sick children last weekend. I guess I never caught it as a child. My apologies to anyone who I have inadvertently exposed in the last few days. I gather that it's most contagious before the rash appears.

Would anyone like a copy of Courage to Create by Rollo May? I finally got around to reading it, and while I don't regret the time, it isn't a book that I really have any need to keep hold of. It's okay if you live outside of the Netherlands.

Found on the street in Amsterdam, October 2006.

The picture was printed on old (1930s?) postcard stock-- I suppose that it is possible that it was a commercially printed postcard, but I tend to think that it was actually a family picture, since the image isn't that charming.

If any of the artists out there can use this or would like this, I'm happy to put it in the mail to you. Just email me your snail address via my lj email.

Anyone out there interested in owning this book? It's meant to be a classic of Christian humanism, which I can normally tolerate, but I would prefer not to keep this in my collection. It seems to me someone else might get more use out of it. Drop me an email with your mailing address and I'll put it in the post for you. International addresses also okay.

"I use logic to show how faith and logic fit together and then say that if anybody challenges my logic that they are sadly showing symptoms of their spiritual impoverishment because they rely on logic." Bah. (note: that isn't a direct quotation, that's me being snarky."

information & ticket sales

location Amstelkerk
date Fri 16 June
starting time 9 pm

time 1 hour, 30 minutes, no interval

Jazz pianist and composer Uri Caine arranges works by the great classical composers – Bach, Wagner, Schumann and Mahler, for example – applying a wide range of musical styles, from jazz and soul to klezmer and classical. The elegant and deceptively straightforward Mozart is in fact one of the great musical challenges of any performer, and this timeless genius is at the centre of Uri Caine’s current project. His Mozart interpretations were conceived specially for the Holland Festival and will be performed in a full-length concert on 16 June.
