"Opinions are coffins, I'll just trust my feet"-- Richard Thompson at the Paradiso

I went with [info]bezigebij last night to see Richard Thompson at the Paradiso. It's the second time that I have seen him perform, and I liked seeing him much better the second time around. The first time was twelve years or so ago (!!) when I saw him at an open air free concert in Philly.

I have to admit that while I have always admired Thompson, I am not really a fan girl. I tend to like his Richard & Linda period material (Shoot Out the Lights and Pour Down Like Silver being my two favorite albums). I know that serious Richard Thompson fans heap scorn upon the head of lightweights like me. :)

He puts on a really nice show. It's obvious that he was having a good time and they put on a long and energetic show. His voice is *still* so lovely. My hair stood up on end when he performed "1952 Vincent Black Lightning".

I got two of my dearest wishes. I got to hear "A Man in Need" and "Wall of Death". He played a number of songs off the new album. They were okay. One in particular, "Sunset Song", got downloaded immediately when I got home.

Paradiso was full and the crowd was happy and mostly over 50. :) Thompson made a joke that at his age there was a deep vein thrombosis risk at every concert. Very nice to see [info]bezigebij and good show.

p.s. Thanks to Tim who gave me the heads up that this was going to happen.

His son Teddy has a habit of opening for him. Did he do so?

Did he play Gethesemane?

nope & nope. we missed the opening act, but it was someone named Diana Jones...

If you get a chance, check out his son Teddy's music (well, Linda's son, too). It's more twangy Americana, but it's pretty lovely nonetheless. Teddy & Rufus are best friends, or used to be (because of their parents). So much musical inbreeding!

I am so thrilled that you were able to go to this show. I wouldn't dream of heaping scorn on the woman who turned me on to Shoot Out The Lights and hence a lifelong love of the man and his music. I've been trying to convince my wife (also a fan, but of a more practical nature) that we should visit her aged Mom in Vermont in the end of January so we can leave the kids with her and catch his 1,000 Years of Popular Music show at the Flynn in Burlington. Saw that performed in Albany in 2004 and loved it.

Tim

Thanks again for inviting me to the concert. I really enjoyed both the music and your company.
